The global rights of Gonçalo Galvão Teles’ “Nothing Ever Happened” have been acquired by Porter+Craig Film and Media Distribution, which is led by seasoned industry veterans Jeff Porter and Keith L. Craig.
The film received numerous accolades during its festival run, including nominations for eleven Sophia Awards from the Portuguese Film Academy and awards from the CinEuphoria Awards, Cinequest, Chicago Latino Film Festival, Mostra Internacional de São Paulo, and Punta Del Est Film Festival in Uruguay.
Filmed in collaboration with Fado Filmes, Entre Chien et Loup (Belgium), and Grafo Audiovisual (Brazil), it is produced by Luis Galvão of Portugal’s Fado Filmes and co-produced by Raquel Morte and Antonio Gonçalves Junior.
Regarding the agreement, Craig stated: “Nothing Ever Happened” is a perfect fit for our strategic goal of releasing motion pictures with distinct viewpoints and nuanced emotional content. Gonçalo Galvão Teles is an incredible director that we hope to present to a larger audience. In addition to being a monetary success, we hope the movie will make a significant contribution to social and cultural discussions, reinforcing our dedication to meaningful and diverse filmmaking.
Three teenagers—Pedro, Maria, and Paulo—star in this coming-of-age story that combines themes of despair and sexual exploration. Pedro’s family is left in a hopeless state of sorrow and decay when the adolescents commit themselves. The late Filipe Duarte and Alba Batista (“Warrior Nun”), who plays youthful Maria, are among the cast members.
One of the oldest and busiest film production businesses in Portugal was established in 1997 and is called Fado Filmes. It has generated over 40 films that have been seen by around 9 million people.
Gonçalo Galvão Teles, a USC screenwriting master’s graduate, says he tried fusing his sensibility and aesthetic—shaped by his Portuguese upbringing—with the rigors American filmmaking process for his first solo feature film. He was drawn to the project because he wanted to know what was going through the youngsters’ minds when they took their own lives, and what kind of introspection this tragedy had caused in their parents and grandparents.
The movie debuted in September 2022 in Portugal and then in the co-producing nations of Brazil and Belgium. Until the Cannes agreement, the global distribution rights for the movie were up for grabs.
Galvão Teles clarifies that the distributor’s first interest in the film was sparked by the very favourable reception it received from screenings at American film festivals. The helmer expects that the arrangement, which was signed at Cannes after several months of discussions, will provide him access to global theatrical, streaming, and TV networks.
ICA, PIC/Cash Rebate scheme, Eurimages, RTP, Lisbon City Council, Ibermedia, the Belgian Tax-shelter, Belga Films Fund, Belga Productions, and Outsider Films all provided funding for “Nothing Ever Happened.”
With an annual slate of 50 to 100 films, Porter + Craig Film and Media Distribution is based in Beverly Hills, California, and manages both its own slate of films and content from third parties. Lumina, a sci-fi thriller, Mena Gay’s “The Undead,” and Roger Corman: The Pope of Pop Cinema, a documentary, are among the films on its current schedule.
