The Cannes Film Festival is a number of things: a prestigious venue for the greatest in international film, a significant industry gathering where deals are negotiated, and a symbol of the widespread sexual assault and classism in the French film industry. Above all, though, it’s one of the best photo ops in the world.
Of course, everyone aspires to win the Palme D’Or. However, many more would do anything to be spotted on the renowned Cannes red carpet and have their photo taken by the throngs of photographers that set up shop on the Croisette. Every year, some of the most stunning and glamorous celebrities in the world can be seen posing for photographers on the steps outside the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès. While it’s not quite the same as the Met Gala in terms of fashion, it’s still a great chance for us common people to ogle some exceptionally shiny stars in all of their finery.
The Cannes Film Festival began this year with an exceptionally glamorous cast of stars. During the premiere of the first film, “The Second Act,” stars including Léa Seydoux, Vincent Lindon, and Louis Garrel walked the red carpet with the actors of Quentin Dupieux’s picture. Meryl Streep, who was bestowed with an Honorary Palme d’Or during the first ceremony, was there with notable attendees such as Jane Fonda and Heidi Klum. There were also the members of the Main Competition jury, which includes Hirokazu Kore-eda, Omar Sy, Lily Gladstone, J.A. Bayona, Ebru Ceylan, Pierfrancesco Favino, Eva Green, and Nadine Labaki. The jury is chaired by Greta Gerwig. In addition, there was the Un Certain Regard jury, which included Todd McCarthy, Maïmouna Doucouré, Asmae El Moudir, Vicky Krieps, and filmmaker Xavier Dolan. Not to be forgotten was the adored “Anatomy of a Fall” star Messi, who attended the event after taking a break from filming a TV series that was filmed on the festival grounds.
