The restored version of Tsui Hark’s Shanghai Blues, which shown for its 40th anniversary at Cannes Classics with star Sylvia Chang in attendance, has sold well, according to Distribution Workshop.
For France and French-speaking regions, Spectrum Films has acquired the bittersweet love story from 1984, which takes place in 1940s Shanghai during the war.
In charge of handling foreign sales, Distribution Workshop has received proposals from South Korea, Japan, the US, and the UK.
The first movie made by Tsui and producer Nansun Shi’s Hong Kong-based Film Workshop, which was founded in 1984, was Shanghai Blues. Kenny Bee and Sally Yeh are in the cast, while the late James Wong wrote the music.
Tsui and Shi worked with L’Immagine Ritrovata to oversee the 4K restoration of the original negative.
